How to become a pharmacy technician?

Most states require obtaining a license from the state board of pharmacy. Licensing requirements vary by state but generally include a high school diploma or GED, completion of a formal education or training program, and passing a criminal background check.

Some states and employers also require pharmacy technicians to be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Even in areas where certification isn’t mandatory, earning it can increase your chances of securing a job or receiving a higher starting salary.

What is the
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board?

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is a nationally recognized organization that certifies pharmacy technicians.
The PTCB was founded in 1995 by the American Pharmacists Association. Its mission is to advance medication safety by credentialing technicians who are qualified to support patient care teams in all practice settings.

The PTCB offers a certification exam that evaluates a pharmacy technician’s knowledge in key areas such as medication safety, pharmacy law, inventory management, and prescription processing.

As a highly respected organization, many states require PTCB certification for pharmacy technician licensure. Additionally, many employers offer raises and promotions to technicians who earn PTCB certification, recognizing it as a valuable professional credential.
