If you want to work as a pharmacy technician in Pennsylvania, you must now register with the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy. New licensing requirements took effect on June 28, 2025, changing Pennsylvania from one of the few states without pharmacy technician registration to a state with formal requirements for technicians.

To become a registered pharmacy technician, applicants generally must meet age and education requirements, complete a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program, complete required child abuse recognition and reporting training, undergo a criminal background check, and submit an application through the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS).

Pennsylvania also offers a pharmacy technician trainee registration for individuals who are still completing their education or training. National PTCB certification is not required for registration, but becoming a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) can provide additional employment and career opportunities.

Pennsylvania pharmacy technician license requirements

Before you can begin working as a pharmacy technician in Pennsylvania, you must obtain Pharmacy Technician registration through the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy. This registration is commonly referred to as a Pennsylvania pharmacy technician license. Below is a summary of the key requirements:
  • Application fees: 
    • As of 2026, the application fee for initial Pharmacy Technician registration is $30.
    • Pennsylvania pharmacy technician registrations must be renewed every two years. The current biennial renewal fee is $70.
  • Minimum age requirement: 
    • You must be at least 17 years old to qualify for full pharmacy technician registration in Pennsylvania.
    • If you are 16 years old, you may be eligible to register as a pharmacy technician trainee instead. The pharmacy technician trainee pathway is covered in the next section.
  • Education requirements: 
    • Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent to qualify for full Pharmacy Technician registration.
    • If you have not yet completed high school, you may be eligible to register as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee instead.
  • Criminal history background check: 
    • Applicants must complete a criminal history record check as part of the registration process.
    • Having a criminal record does not necessarily prevent you from becoming a registered pharmacy technician. Each case is reviewed individually by the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Pharmacy training requirement: 
    • Pennsylvania requires applicants to successfully complete a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program before qualifying for full Pharmacy Technician registration.
    • There are several pathways for meeting the training requirement. We explain these options, including PTCB-recognized pharmacy technician training programs, later in this guide.
  • Is PTCB certification required in Pennsylvania?
    No. National certification, such as the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential offered by PTCB, is not required to become a registered pharmacy technician in Pennsylvania.

    However, certification may provide additional career benefits and may be preferred by some employers. We discuss PTCB certification in more detail later in this guide. 

Pennsylvania pharmacy technician trainee registration

If you do not yet meet the requirements for full Pharmacy Technician registration, you may be eligible to register as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee. This temporary registration allows you to work as a pharmacy technician under the direct and immediate supervision of a licensed pharmacist while you complete the requirements for full registration.

Pharmacy technician trainee requirements

To apply for Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration in Pennsylvania, you must:
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Complete a criminal history record check
  • Complete 3 hours of approved training in child abuse recognition and reporting
  • Submit your application through the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS)
  • Pay the $15 trainee registration fee
You do not need a high school diploma or pharmacy technician training to register as a trainee. This makes the trainee pathway an option for individuals who want to begin working in a pharmacy while completing the education and training requirements for full Pharmacy Technician registration.

How long is a pharmacy technician trainee registration valid?

A Pennsylvania Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration is temporary and is valid for up to two years. It expires two years after it is issued or when you obtain full Pharmacy Technician registration, whichever occurs first.

Pennsylvania allows an individual to receive only one Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration, so it cannot be renewed or obtained again after it expires.

Pennsylvania pharmacy technician training requirements

Pennsylvania requires applicants for full Pharmacy Technician registration to complete a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program. The Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy recognizes several types of training providers and programs that can satisfy this requirement.

Qualifying programs must provide instruction in the areas of pharmacy practice required by Pennsylvania and include a method for assessing competency in those areas. Applicants only need to complete one of the approved training pathways described below.

What Pharmacy Technician Training Programs Are Approved in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania recognizes the following pathways for meeting its pharmacy technician training requirement:
ONLINE OPTION

PTCB-recognized education/training program

Pennsylvania recognizes pharmacy technician education and training programs recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) as an approved training pathway. Completing a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program satisfies Pennsylvania’s pharmacy technician training requirement for full registration.

PTCB-recognized programs cover the essential knowledge and skills pharmacy technicians need to learn, including medications, pharmacy law, medication safety, pharmacy calculations, and pharmacy operations. Programs must meet PTCB’s education and training requirements, and completing a recognized program also satisfies the education requirement for eligibility to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE).

PTCB-recognized training programs may be offered entirely online, allowing students to complete Pennsylvania’s pharmacy technician training requirement without an in-person classroom or experiential training component.

PTCB-recognized training is not the same as PTCB certification.

A PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program provides the training needed to satisfy Pennsylvania’s education requirement for Pharmacy Technician registration. PTCB certification is a separate credential that is earned by meeting PTCB’s eligibility requirements and passing the PTCE to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).

Pennsylvania does not require national certification or passing the PTCE for Pharmacy Technician registration. Completing an approved training program is sufficient to meet the state’s training requirement.

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is the leading national organization for pharmacy technician certification in the United States. It administers the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE), which allows candidates to earn the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential.

PTCB certification is separate from Pennsylvania Pharmacy Technician registration. However, becoming nationally certified can strengthen your professional credentials and may provide additional employment and career advancement opportunities.

Is PTCB certification required in Pennsylvania?

No. Pennsylvania does not require national certification or passing the PTCE to become a registered pharmacy technician.

Instead, applicants must complete an approved pharmacy technician training program and meet the other registration requirements established by the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy.

However, earning PTCB certification may still be worth considering. Some pharmacy employers prefer certified pharmacy technicians or may require certification for certain positions. Certification can also demonstrate that you have met national standards and successfully passed an examination covering the knowledge required for pharmacy technician practice.

PTCB-recognized training vs. PTCB certification

Although the terms sound similar, PTCB-recognized training and PTCB certification are not the same thing.

PTCB-recognized training refers to an education or training program recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Pennsylvania recognizes PTCB-recognized education/training programs as one pathway for satisfying the state’s pharmacy technician training requirement.

PTCB certification refers to earning the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential. Candidates typically earn this credential by meeting PTCB's eligibility requirements and passing the PTCE.

Completing a PTCB-recognized education/training program also provides a pathway to PTCE eligibility.

The dual benefit of PTCB-recognized training

For Pennsylvania students, completing a PTCB-recognized training program can serve two purposes:
  • Satisfy Pennsylvania’s pharmacy technician training requirement through a recognized training pathway.
  • Meet the education requirement for PTCE eligibility, allowing you to pursue national PTCB certification after completing your training.
This allows you to complete the training needed for Pennsylvania registration while also preparing for national certification if you choose to pursue it.

After earning PTCB certification, you can use the CPhT credential after your name, identifying you as a Certified Pharmacy Technician. The credential provides a visible way to demonstrate your professional achievement to employers, coworkers, and patients and can help distinguish you from pharmacy technicians who are not nationally certified.

Potential for higher pay and career advancement

Certification may provide access to additional employment, promotion, and advancement opportunities. Some employers prefer or require certified pharmacy technicians for certain positions and may offer higher pay or other incentives to technicians who obtain or maintain national certification.

How to apply for a Pennsylvania pharmacy technician license

Once you have met Pennsylvania’s pharmacy technician requirements, you can begin the registration process. Although commonly referred to as a pharmacy technician license, Pennsylvania officially calls the credential Pharmacy Technician registration.


Follow the steps below to become a registered pharmacy technician in Pennsylvania.

Step 1

Meet the age and education requirements

To qualify for full Pharmacy Technician registration, you must be at least 17 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

If you do not yet meet these requirements, you may be eligible for Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration instead.
Step 2

Complete an approved pharmacy technician training program

Before qualifying for full registration, you must successfully complete a Board-approved pharmacy technician training program.

Pennsylvania recognizes several training pathways. You can review the approved pharmacy technician training options earlier in this guide.
Step 3

Complete the required child abuse recognition and reporting training

Complete at least 3 hours of approved training in child abuse recognition and reporting.

The training must be completed through an approved provider. Pennsylvania maintains a list of approved child abuse training providers where you can find qualifying courses.
Step 4

Begin your application through PALS

Create an account or sign in to the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS) and begin an application for pharmacy technician registration through the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy.

Your PALS application will provide instructions and a checklist of the documentation needed to complete the registration process.
Step 5

Complete Your background check and training verification

Applicants must complete a criminal history record check as part of the registration process. Follow the instructions provided through your PALS application to complete the required background check and submit any required documentation.

You will also need to provide verification that you successfully completed a qualifying pharmacy technician training program. The appropriate training verification form is generated through your PALS application and must be completed according to the instructions provided.
Step 6

Submit your application

Once you have completed the required steps and provided the necessary documentation, review and submit your Pharmacy Technician registration application through PALS.

The current initial registration fee is $30.
Step 7

Receive your registration and start your pharmacy technician career

Once your application and required documentation have been reviewed and approved, you will receive your Pennsylvania Pharmacy Technician registration.

Registered pharmacy technicians can work in a variety of pharmacy settings, including community pharmacies, hospitals and health systems, long-term care pharmacies, specialty pharmacies, and mail-order pharmacies.

How high school students can become pharmacy technicians in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s pharmacy technician trainee license

Pennsylvania allows individuals as young as 16 years old to apply for Pharmacy Technician Trainee registration. Unlike full Pharmacy Technician registration, you do not need a high school diploma or equivalent to become a trainee.

This can allow high school students to:
  • Work in a pharmacy while still attending high school
  • Gain practical pharmacy and healthcare experience before graduation
  • Earn an income while building their resume

The trainee registration is valid for up to two years and cannot be renewed. During this period, students can work toward completing the education and training requirements needed to qualify for full Pharmacy Technician registration.

Earning PTCB certification as a high school student

PTCB’s current CPhT eligibility requirements do not list a minimum age or high school diploma requirement. High school students who meet PTCB’s other eligibility requirements may therefore be eligible to take the PTCE before graduation.

Becoming nationally certified in high school shows initiative, focus, and discipline. These are qualities that stand out on college applications, scholarship essays, and job interviews. Whether you’re interested in pharmacy school, a nursing program, or a pre-med track, holding the CPhT credential may give you a competitive advantage.

How to get started as a high school student

Some Pennsylvania high schools and Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs may offer pharmacy technician education or related healthcare training. If your school offers a qualifying pharmacy technician program, this may provide a convenient way to begin your training.

If your school does not offer pharmacy technician training, you can also enroll independently in a qualifying program.
